The extended range is achieved even after losing the tip tanks. Honeywell’s TFE 731 is vastly more efficient than the AI-25 which greatly reduces fuel burn. Removal of the tip tanks reduces drag and so does dropping the empty weight by more than 1000 lbs. The American Albatros gets wheels up in 2500’, and gets to FL28 early in the trip to further save fuel.
